Athletics at Transy

Intercollegiate athletics have been an important part of the Transylvania campus scene for over 120 years, since Transy participated in the first organized football game in the South in 1879.

Today, Transylvania competes as an NCAA Division III member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, an eight-team league consisting of outstanding independent academic institutions that also feature highly competitive athletics programs.

Transylvania’s affiliation with Division III reflects the philosophy that athletics play an important role in the overall liberal arts educational experience. The school’s 16 intercollegiate programs are supported with excellent coaching, competitive schedules, first-class facilities, and high expectations for success.

At Transylvania, athletics are an integral part of the total student life experience. With over 250 student athletes, student trainers, sports information assistants, cheerleaders, and dancers, nearly one-quarter of our student population is involved in athletics.

Transylvania’s faculty and coaches alike embrace the true scholar-athlete ideal, valuing the importance of competition while balancing it with the pursuit of excellence in the classroom.
